Glossary Arrangement: Specific combination of doors, sidelites and transoms. Also includes the door handing and swing. Astragal: T shaped wood moulding attached to the inactive door in a double door set. Backset: The distance from the edge of a door to the center of the bore. Bill of Lading: A written receipt given by a shipping company for goods (in our case doors) accepted for transportation. Bore: The hole drilled in a door for a door knob or dead bolt. A single bore allows for a door knob only. A double bore allows for a door knob and a dead bolt. Brick Mould: Exterior trim applied to the edge of the door jamb or door frame. Casing: Interior trim applied to the edge of the door jamb covering the gap to the inside wall. Divided Lites: The style of door or window that has multiple glass panes separated by bars or mouldings. Door Frame: The wood surrounding a door which the hinges attach to on either the left or the right side. Also known as the door jamb. Handing: A door is either left or right handed. This is determined by visualizing your back to the door hinges and if it opens to the right it is a right hand swing. If it opens to the left it is a left hand swing. Header: A board in a house wall framing that spans over the width of a door or window rough opening providing structural support. Lite: Glass in a window or door. Mullion Cover: Wood trim applied to cover the joint between door frame and side lite and/or transom frame. Pre-Hang: Pre-assembling the arrangement of doors and sidelites in a frame (jamb) prior to installing in a wall. Rail: Horizontal component of a door that attaches to both stiles. Rails may top rails (top of the door), lock rails (near the door knob) or bottom rails (at the bottom). Rough Opening: Opening framed into a house to allow for the installation of a pre-hung door unit. The rough opening size is usually about 1/2 inch taller and 1/2 inch wider than the pre-hung unit. Stile: Long vertical door component that runs the entire height on both the left and right side of the door. Sub Floor: Typically plywood or oriented strain board (OSB) under the floor covering. Swing: A door opening into the building is an in-swing. A door opening to the outside of a building is an out-swing. See Handing above for defining right or left swing. Transom: Window directly over a door. Typically the shape is square, elliptical or a half round. Threshold: The sill of a doorway. Weatherstrip: Soft material that attaches to the door frame (jamb) to prevent air infiltration.
